Return-To-Work Programs Q & A

What is a return-to-work program?

A return-to-work program focuses on getting you back to your healthiest self after a work-related injury. The team at Loudoun Physical Therapy creates a specialized treatment plan that focuses on the problem areas that prevent you from returning to work.

Services that may be in your customized return-to-work program include:

  • Baseline function tests
  • Job/task-specific occupational therapy
  • Injury-specific physical therapy
  • Behavioral and psychological therapy
  • Job simulation
  • Job site analysis
  • Ongoing care after you’ve returned to work

There are two basic approaches to your personalized return-to-work plan: work conditioning or work hardening. These programs are similar in their end goals, but differ in the support they offer.

What is work conditioning?

Work conditioning is a treatment plan that focuses on returning you to work as quickly and safely as possible. Using physical and occupational therapies, your team will formulate an individualized plan, involving the return of full functionality, with a focus on what is needed to physically perform your job-related tasks.

Work conditioning requires aggressive focus on the injured part of your body, and your therapist will treat you 4-8 hours daily for 10 days or more. The goal is to get you back to work as safely and early as possible.

What is work hardening?

Work hardening is a team approach, that includes not only physical and occupational therapies, but a multidisciplinary team that treats your whole body. Since work-related injuries tend to extend beyond physical damage, this return-to-work program has a holistic approach.

To get you back to your job-related skills, in addition to the physical work of conditioning, you may also need:

  • Behavioral therapy
  • Psychosocial therapy
  • Vocational improvement coaching

Work hardening may benefit those who have had pre-injury chronic pain or behavioral concerns. This approach to therapy usually lasts eight hours per day over 15-20 days.

At Loudoun Physical Therapy, the team makes your return to work their priority and creates an individualized plan that gets you back to your best shape as quickly and safely as possible.
